Madeira

The last two days of our trans-Atlantic voyage were like what cruising is supposed to be all about. North of us, off the coast of Great Britain, was a huge storm, packing substantial winds. The resulting residual effect a thousand miles south, were large 8-12+ foot swells, under sunny, warm skies. It was enough to make it necessary to hold on as we walked about, but not enough to make the grand pianos careen indiscriminately against unsuspecting souls walking around with walkers - or those tottering around like I do normally!!

Madeira, which is a Portuguese island, is, of course, famous for its Madeira wine (m'dear). You knew I was going to do that. I promise I won't any more. Really.

Madeira was one of 5 ports along the journey that I had not been to before, and, believe me, I shall do everything possible to return sometime soon!! What an absolute GEM!! It is very European visually and culturally. The fact they speak Portugese helps too....

We docked in Funchal, the capital, and I took an island tour. The island is VERY mountainous with an equally rugged coastline, much of which is dominated by huge cliffs soaring straight upwards out of the water.

The cities and towns are all whitewashed, with red tile roofs, and are nestled precariously against the steep hillsides. In addition, the towns are surrounded by steep terracing which provides for the vineyards and the general agriculture.

This is a view of the outskirts of Funchal as we left.
