Luderitz, Namibia |
|
| Well, the next day we hit Luderitz - which is not the German word for 'dismal', or 'barren', or 'wasteland' - although it prolly should be. It's named after a dude, from Bremen, who bought this area of South West Africa because no one else owned it. Rhere was a shallow bay, so he set up a trading post. And this trading post just happened to be on the edge of miles and miles and miles of diamonds! Diamonds just lying around in the gravel and the sand (which, as you may remember, are the Namibian words for bushes and grass). So in 1883 Luderitz was established by this guy Adolf Luderitz (thanks Wikipedia) as a trading post. | |
